Velvet nails combine cat-eye polish with a magnetic technique to create a reflective, jewel-like manicure. The trend uses magnetic pigments that shift in light, giving nails a lustrous finish that mimics the soft texture of velvet fabric.
Nail artist Ramon Duran explains the DIY process: start by grooming and shaping nails, then apply a base coat if using gel. Paint one or two coats of cat-eye polish, then hold a strong magnet close to the wet polish before curing. "The key is a strong magnet and shifting all the metallic glitter to the middle," Duran says. "Hover around the entire nail to push the reflection where you want it." After curing, apply a clear top coat and cure again.
Color choice affects the final look. Lighter polishes create a whimsical, ethereal appearance, while deeper shades like emerald, burgundy, and midnight purple deliver a richer, more jewel-like effect. Duran notes there are many color options available.
